This tuner works with ukuleles and guitars, and it is THE BEST choice for young students. Why? It's based on a color system!!!
If the string is out of tune, it turns red. If the string is in tune, it turns green.
While it is a $20 investment, you don't need to understand or adjust any part of the tuner. Just clip it onto the headstock of your instrument and begin tuning. It's incredibly accurate, does not pick up background noise, and comes with a lifetime warranty.
There are a lot of tuning apps out there and you should explore which one is right for you, but these are the two I use in all my classes.
I love how simple and direct it is. My students press the note name, and we adjust the tuning pegs until we get it in tune and the sounds match. The only drawback are the little ads on the bottom of the app.
